Invasive species in ship ballast water have become one of the greatest threats to the global marine environment. On the 27th at the "2007 China International Maritime Technology Exhibition" opened at the Shanghai New International Expo Center, PureBallast, a chemical-free environmentally friendly treatment system for removing potentially invasive species in ballast water, debuted in China and will be put into use next year. The container ships manufactured in China, thus effectively protecting the marine environment.
According to the system research and development company, the system uses advanced oxidation technology, which can generate free radicals during photoexcitation, and then decompose the microbial cell membrane without using any chemicals or harmful residues.
It is reported that the technology will complete the final feasibility test in March next year, and will be recognized by the International Maritime Organization as the world's first fully recognized ballast water treatment system.
In the first half of this year, China's shipbuilding completion volume reached 7.55 million deadweight tons, up 43% year-on-year; new ship orders were 42.62 million DWT, up 165% year-on-year; hand-held ship orders exceeded 100 million tons for the first time, up 107% year-on-year. At present, China is second only to South Korea as the world's second largest shipbuilding country.
